Mrs. Sarah Jane Messer, 86, of Bimble, passed away Wednesday afternoon, June 12, 2024 at Baptist Health Corbin. She was the daughter of the late Boyd and Mary Bingham Cooper born on March 27, 1938 at Scalf.

Sarah was a homemaker and a member of the Liberty Missionary Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking, especially soup beans and cornbread, watching cardinals and attending church.

On March 6, 1962, she united in marriage with Jess Messer Jr. and to this union, two daughters were born.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jess; sisters, Ida Baker and Opal Hibbard; brothers, Boyd Cooper Jr. and James William Cooper and a grandson, Michael Joseph Lee Carnes.

Survivors include her loving daughters, Devonia Gail Baker and husband, Gary, of Scalf and Donna Carnes and husband, Lonnie, of Barbourville; a sister, Anna Lois Baker of Bimble; a brother, Robert Cooper and wife, Susan, of Bimble; a sister-in-law, Loretta Cooper of Bimble; brothers-in-law, Vernon Messer of Dewitt and Walter Messer of Piqua, OH; four treasured grandchildren; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; among other loved ones and dear friends.

Her funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Tuesday, June 18 at 1 P.M. with Rev. Daniel Alsip and Rev. Kennon Roark officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Lee Carnes Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be family and friends.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Monday between 6 and 9 P.M. and Tuesday prior to the funeral hour.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.

Mr. Franklin Delano Chavies, 91, of Himyar, passed away Wednesday morning, June 12, 2024 at his home. He was the son of the late Edward Douglas and Laura Ellen Gambrel Chavies born June 8, 1933 in Pineville.

Frank was a United States Navy veteran who dedicated 28 years of service to his country and achieved the rank of Petty Officer First Class. His spirit of service to others continued within his local community, as he was an original member of the East Knox Volunteer Fire Department and their former secretary. He was also a devoted member of the Himyar Baptist Church. In his spare time, Frank enjoyed going bowling, playing softball and checkers and reading his Bible.

On December 7, 1954, he united in marriage with Edith Baker at Himyar and to this union five children were born.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edith; son, Franklin Darrell Chavies and brothers, Alford, Tye, Elmer and Jack Chavies.

Survivors include his loving children, Terry and Dale Cleaveland of South Carolina, Joanna Turner of Morhead, David and Michelle Chavies of Flat Lick and Dennis and Carrol Chavies of Himyar; cherished grandchildren, Daniel Arnold Jr., Donald Arnold, Erin Bentley, Kristina Kegley, Jamie Marion, Jason Chavies, Nathan Chavies, Vanessa Cooper, Katie Walker, Valarie Chavies, Timothy Chavies and Alecia Chavies; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Monday, June 17 at 11 A.M. with Rev. Sam Moore and Rev. Jimmy Siler officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Farley Cemetery with military funeral honors.

Casket bearers will be members of the East Knox Volunteer Fire Department. Honorary bearers will be his family and friends.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Sunday from 6 until 8 P.M. and Monday prior to the funeral hour.

Mr. Harold Lawrence (Larry) Morgan, 90, of Lexington, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2024. Larry was the son of the late Harold A. “Ham” & Jennie Belle Morgan born June 25, 1933, in Worthington, Ohio.

Larry was a proud alumnus of The Ohio State University and obtained his MBA from Harvard. He had a successful management career in the soft drink industry with co*ke and Pepsi and retired from Pepsi of Corbin. Larry was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He loved meeting and talking to people because he never met a stranger. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the grandkids.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Terry; and late wife, Patricia (McKee) Morgan.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 24 years, Truleen (Phipps) Morgan of Lexington; children, Larry (Bud) Morgan (Phyllis) of St. Petersburg, FL, Jeffery Morgan (Penny) of Cornelius, NC; step-children, Michael Barton of Lexington, KY, William Barton (Ashley) of Bardstown, KY, Terri Upchurch (Timothy) of Lexington, KY; cherished grandchildren, Heather Morgan Smith (Matthew), Nicole Morgan, Chase and Reagan Upchurch, Reagan and Macy Brown; great-grandchild Hunter; and many loved ones and dear friends.

A celebration of Larry’s life will be held at a later date. The Interment will be in Tampa, FL.

Herbert was a former delivery truck driver with the United States Postal Service and of the Holiness faith. He loved working and talking to people. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the grandkids.

On May 25, 1963, he united in marriage with Carol Smith in Harvard, IL.

Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Carol Smith of Bimble; children, Darla Abner and husband, Keith, of Heidrick and Darrin Smith and wife, Teresa, of Himyar; a sister, Judy Baker of Corbin; brothers, Harold Gene Smith and wife, Debra, of Bimble, Don Smith and wife, Lynn, of Boone Height, Jerry Smith and wife, Peggy, of Bimble, John Smith of Girdler, Rev. Patsy served 43 years as postmaster at the Hinkle Post Office and was a member of the Scalf Chapel Church. She enjoyed fishing, dancing, gardening and cheering on the UK basketball team. She most enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

On October 15, 1954, she united in marriage with E. G. Patterson and to this union six sons were born.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, E. G.; sisters, Zella Callebs, Juanita Corey Hlifka, Maxine Spivey and Polly Fields; brothers, Jack, Walt, J. D., A. Y. and Raymond Hawn and a great grandson, Jathan Patterson.

Survivors include six loving sons, Michael Patterson and wife, Wilma, of Barbourville, Steve Patterson of Hinkle, Louie Patterson of Barbourville, Scott Patterson and wife, Melinda, of Gray, Larry Patterson and wife, Evelyn, of Bimble and Jeffery Patterson and wife, Kim, of London; nine grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; among other loved ones and dear friends.

Clyde was a former coal miner and truck driver and of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed fishing and watching television.

On September 15, 2020, he united in marriage with Irene Lewis in Pineville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Dalen Sizemore.

Survivors include his loving wife, Irene Sizemore of Barbourville; children, Jennifer Senters and husband, Richard, of Barbourville, Billy Brock and wife, Candace, of Harlan County and Bobby Brock and Brian Brock both of Barbourville; three sisters, Betty Burton and husband, Sonny, of Bimble, Carol Harmon and husband, Tony, of Florida and Kathy Gray and husband, James, of Artemus; grandchildren, Brayden and Jasper Brock and Makayla Olsen; a great granddaughter, Eleanor Olsen; among other loved ones and dear friends.

John was a former middle school principal and educator with the Lee County Board of Education and attended the First United Methodist Church of Barbourville. He was a pilot and enjoyed flying and playing the guitar. He faithfully served his country in the United States Navy and was a former Mason and Oleika Shriner.

On December 23, 1958, he united in marriage with Frieda Gayle Hollon at Primrose in Lee County and to this union a daughter was born.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frieda Prater in April; two sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include his loving daughter, Starr Rossman and husband, Kevin, of Barbourville; a sister, Augusta Prater of Mt. Sterling; brothers, Otis Prater Jr. of Berea and Haskell Prater of Floyd County; a treasured grandson, Travis Rossman and wife, Whitney; great granddaughters, Abigail and Joanna; among other loved ones and dear friends he cherished.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Brown and a niece, Shannon Mills.

Survivors include her sister, Dorothy Taylor and husband, Kenneth, of Walker; a brother, Trenta Smith of Girdler; several nieces and nephews including Cordia Brown and Kourtland Mills; among other loved ones and dear friends.

A graveside service will be conducted in the Smith Family Cemetery at Girdler Monday, May 20 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Bill Collins Jr. officiating.

Margaret was a devoted homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She loved her family and most enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

On April 7, 1972, she united in marriage with William G. “Bill” Hamilton II at Heidrick and to this union two sons were born.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Tip and Kenneth Hudson; a sister, Colleen Carnes and a daughter-in-law, Shara Hamilton.

Survivors include her loving husband of over 52 years, Bill Hamilton of Davis Bend; sons, William G. Hamilton III and wife, Leah, of Bailey Switch and Christopher Brian Hamilton and wife, Kristi, of Davis Bend; a sister, Nannie Mae Ballard; cherished grandchildren, Hannah, Jacob and Brady Hamilton, Karissa Buchanan and Abigail Jenkins and husband, Cody; great-grandchildren, Carter Jenkins, Amelia Shields and Willow Jenkins, who is expected to arrive soon; sisters of the heart, Debbie Sizemore and Beverly Hudson; among other loved ones and dear friends.

A private family graveside service will be held at the Patterson Cemetery with Rev. Tommy Frazier officiating.

Serving as casket bearers will be Michael Hudson, Charlie Hudson, Dexter Carnes, Rick Carnes, Mike Warren and Thomas Levering. Serving as honorary bearers will be Virgil Moore, Johnny Wilder, James Miller and Henry Sizemore.
