Michael Harmody Labor Unionist Dies Michael Harmodv father of Cleveland City Council man Richard Harmody 9 and an active labor unionist died yesterday at the Holy amily Home in Parma He was 65 Mr Harmody had been an inspector for the Euclid Divi sion of the General Motors Corp for the last 15 years Prior to that he had worked for the old Otis Steel Co now part of Jones Laughlin Steel Corp He worked for the latter firm for 25 years He was one of the early organizers and member of the United Steelworkers of America of the old Congress of In dustrial Organizations after World War I in Sharon Pa Later he became active in the United Auto Workers and held several offices Most recently he was a trustee of Local 296 UAW He also served on the Committee of Political Education of the UAW for Parma and Parma Heights area He was a long time member of the Parma Democratic Club and the Holy Name Society of St rancis deSales Catholic Church He lived at 4007 Albertly Avenue Parma Surviving are his wife Mary two other sons Thomas and Michael Jr seven grandchildren three brothers and four sisters Gordon Basler 50 Dratlj 2snttrra Reifivfd L'n'il 11 P31 ar Xrx! She was 77 Mrs Ward who formerly lived at 23221 Lake Shore Boulevard Euclid served as board secretary for 10 years in the 1940s and 1950s SHE WAS ALSO A former director of Huron Road Hos pital a member of the Lake Shore Methodist Church the Colony of Mayflower Descendants and the Elyria Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution She lived most of her life in Cleveland but spent the last four years in Elyria with a daughter Mrs George Johnson Jr 1042 Pasadena Avenue in Antipollution War A virtually anonymous com mittee of City Council two years ago first began calling attention to the problems of air and water pollution to Clevelanders In recent days this biggest spokesman has become Mayor Ralph Locher Yesterday Locher promised the air and water pollution committee he would seek all federal money available to combat air pollution in Cleve land Locher told the committee that control of air pollution is a state and local responsibi lity but the national scope of air pollution calls for the fed eral government to play a leading part in finding solu tions THE COMMITTEE headed by Henry Sinkiewicz met in special session to consider an amendment to air pollution code It approved an amendment to require most metal produc ing plants in Cleveland to in stall pollution control devices on their furnaces by Dec 31 1967 The original ordinance set a 1972 deadline Another amendment di rected primarily at Republic Steel called for instal lation of pollution control de vices on open hearth and basic oxygen furnaces by Sept 30 of next year THE AMENDMENTS were sponsored by Councilmen John Bilinski 7 and Mrs Turfanda ranks 14 Both councilmen repre sent wards bordering Cleve highly industrial Cuya hoga Valley where effects of air pollution have been most noticeable A representative of Repub lic Steel told the committee that Republic was converting its open hearth furnaces to basic oxygen type furnaces with pollution control devices Council is expected to ap prove the recommendations at the next session Sept 13 COMMISSIONER Albert Locuoco of the division of air and stream pollution told the committee that since 1961 Cleveland industries have spent more than $19
