What is the average net worth of a 70 year old?
For example, one rule suggests having a net worth at 70 that's equivalent to 20 times your annual expenses. If you spend $100,000 a year to live in retirement, you should have a net worth of at least $2 million.

In other words, if you spend $75,000 a year, you should have about $1,500,000 in savings or net worth to live a comfortable retirement.

Does net worth include home?
Your net worth is what you own minus what you owe. It's the total value of all your assets—including your house, cars, investments and cash—minus your liabilities (things like credit card debt, student loans, and what you still owe on your mortgage).

The above chart shows that U.S. residents 35 and under have an average of $30,170 in retirement savings; those 35 to 44 have an average $131,950; those 45 to 54 have an average $254,720; those 55 to 64 have an average $408,420; those 65 to 74 have an average $426,070; and those over 70 have an average $357,920.
In fact, statistically, around 10% of retirees have $1 million or more in savings. The majority of retirees, however, have far less saved. If you're looking to be in the minority but aren't sure how to get started on that savings goal, consider working with a financial advisor.
Using the 4% rule with $500,000 in savings, a 70-year-old retiree can count on receiving $20,000 in the first year, which is not exactly a princely sum. Many 70-year-olds won't live for 30 years in retirement, however, so you may consider taking out a little more each year.
U.S. wealth percentiles provide clearer picture of where you rank. According to Schwab's 2023 Modern Wealth Survey, its seventh annual, Americans said it takes an average net worth of $2.2 million to qualify a person as being wealthy. (Net worth is the sum of your assets minus your liabilities.)
Additionally, statistics show that the top 2% of the United States population has a net worth of about $2.4 million. On the other hand, the top 5% wealthiest Americans have a net worth of just over $1 million.
Some sources define upper middle class as anyone who's making a lot of money but hasn't quite crossed the threshold to become truly wealthy yet. These individuals often have a net worth of at least $500,000 to $2 million.
The average monthly payment of $1,782 drops by 30% during the first month of eligibility to $1,247.40. Here's the dollar amount, and the percentage of the full benefit it represents, for every month they wait after that.
What is the average Social Security check for most Americans?
Social Security offers a monthly benefit check to many kinds of recipients. As of August 2023, the average check is $1,705.79, according to the Social Security Administration – but that amount can differ drastically depending on the type of recipient. In fact, retirees typically make more than the overall average.
As of 2022, the average monthly benefit amount from Social Security for couples was $2,739.10.
A good monthly income in California is $3,886, based on what the Bureau of Economic Analysis estimates that Californians pay for their cost of living. A good monthly income for you will depend on what your expenses are and how much you typically spend per month.
In many larger cities across America, $4,000 per month in retirement income won't provide the most luxurious lifestyle. But there are plenty of small towns that offer a high quality of life on a relatively low income.
The rule of thumb is that to you'll need about 80 percent of your pre-retirement income to maintain your lifestyle in retirement, although that rule requires a pretty flexible thumb.
