Piping Hydro (Mechanical)

(OP)

Dears,

Is it possible to create "golden weld" for internal coating pipeline after hydrostatic testing, and what's the technique used for coating "golden weld" ?

note: we have main pipeline 20" and two branches 12" , where each pipeline will be hydrostatic tested separately and then two branches will be connected the main pipeline after hydrostatic test "golden weld"

thanks in advance golden weld - Pipelines, Piping and Fluid Mechanics engineering (2)

First you have to understand the meaning of "Golden Weld"

What is meant by "golden joints"?

A "golden joint" refers to a weld joint that is usually the final weld connecting existing piping to new piping and the joint will not be pressure tested. Since the weld joint will not be pressure tested, NDE is performed in lieu of pressure test. Many owners only want the best welders to weld these joints because NDE is not nearly as good of a test method as hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure testing.

Can you comply with this?

Sometimes its possible to do all the right things and still get bad results

I meant, Is there a solution for internal coating of golden weld or I try to get another way to hydrotest the branches with main pipeline to overcome the problem of internal coating of golden weld .

LittleInch (Petroleum)

What is the internal coating? Very few internal coatings can withstand welding.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

You may have make the location of the weld a lift out spool. Completed the weld then take out the spool to complete the internal coating then refit the spool

is it possible to use a a short pup w/ flanges? the pipeline and short pup can be internally coated and then install the pup.
yes, more $ and time. but an alternative consideration.

canadapipe (Mechanical)

Depending on the coating type there are internal sleeves that can be used to have internal coating which will allow welding.

I've the following in the past,
"Thru-Kote U.B™ sleeve is an unbelled connection system for 2" - 42" line pipe designed to protect internal coatings during welding" (https://www.nov.com/Segments/Wellbore_Technologies...)

Ehzin (Mechanical)

Clarify on what internal coating you have on the rest of the pipe.

Thanks,
Ehzin

The rest of the pipe was coated with Tuboscpoe TK-69.

FAQs

What is a golden weld in pipeline? ›

Published Feb 1, 2024. A "Golden Joint" refers to a specific type of weld joint in piping systems, typically the final weld connecting existing piping to new piping. It's called "golden" because of its critical nature and the importance of its quality.

What are the requirements for golden weld? ›

The weld must be made as a blunt seam and fully welded; 2. The weld must be a pipe-to-pipe connection, a pipe bend, pipe T-piece or pipe-reducing or the like is not allowed. 3. The pipe sections must be arranged stress-free in relation to each other; 4.

What is the difference between closure weld and golden weld? ›

1-If a weld on pressure equipment cannot be subjected to a pressure test (hydrostatic or pneumatic), while the design code of the pressure equipment prescribes this, it is called a "Golden weld". 2-A golden weld, or closure weld, is simply a welded joint that does not undergo pressure tests.

Is pipe welding difficult? ›

Is Pipe Welding Difficult? Pipe welding is often more challenging than other types of welding and requires a higher level of welder skill. This can be due to the working conditions as well as factors such as the travel angle of the weld, the pipe position and the diameter of the pipe.

What are the 3 types of weld? ›

The three most common welding types are – Arc, MIG and TIG welding. Let's take a closer look and discuss some similarities and differences between them. Arc welding also referred to as stick welding is the oldest of the three and probably the most cost efficient.

What is the golden rule in welding? ›

These golden rules are as follows: Joint preparation is important. Welding machine set-up is the vital thing to some smooth weld. Comfort is a bit more important than welding technique.

What is the hardest welding test to pass? ›

The 6G Pipe Welding Certification is the most difficult welding test to pass. This certification tests a welder's skill in all positions of pipe welding, including overhead, vertical, and horizontal.

What metals Cannot be welded? ›

What Metals Cannot Be Welded?
  • Aluminum and carbon steel.
  • Aluminum and copper.
  • Aluminum and stainless steel.
  • Titanium and steel.

What is the hardest weld to learn? ›

Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding is widely considered the most challenging welding process to learn. The sheer complexity of the technique requires more practice and focus to master than other less-technical welding methods. TIG welding also results in some of the strongest and sturdiest welds in the industry.

Which weld is the strongest? ›

What Type Of Weld Is The Strongest? TIG welding is often considered the strongest weld since it produces extreme heat, and the slow cooling rate results in high tensile strength and ductility.

What is the most complicated weld? ›

TIG welding is the hardest form of welding to learn for a variety of reasons. The process of TIG welding is slow and takes time to get used to as a beginner. A TIG welder requires a foot pedal to feed the electrode and control the variable amperage while maintaining a steady hand at the welding torch.

What is the highest paid welding job? ›

The highest paying welder jobs are in industrial construction. Pipe welders, tube welders, rig welders, underwater welders and combo welders are the highest paid of all welding jobs. The type of welding is important and so is the industry. The top welder salary can be over $200,000 per year in industrial construction.

What is the hardest pipe welding position? ›

Inclined Position—6G. The hardest kind of pipe spool welding is inclined position. Typically, you will lift one end of the pipe so that it forms a 45-degree angle with the ground. Since the pipe doesn't move, it's up to the welder to figure out how to work at such an odd angle.

What welder do pipeliners use? ›

Welding pipe is typically done with the stick and TIG welding processes, but pipes are also welded using FCAW (Flux-cored), GMAW (MIG), and submerged arc welding. TIG welding is typically employed when the pipe welded joints must have a high degree of integrity.

What is a gold weld? ›

If a weld on pressure equipment cannot be subjected to a pressure test (hydrostatic or pneumatic) even though the pressure equipment design code requires it, it is called a "Golden Weld." In that case, the steps, as described in this article, must be followed at a minimum.

What is pipe golden joint? ›

When there is restriction in the spool of a pipe line can't be hydro-tested, due to repairs or inlet is welded after test, the header is connected to a lot of branches where hydro -test can't be done, the joints in the loop will be taken 100% radiography, and all those joints are called GOLDEN JOINTS.

What does golden arm mean in welding? ›

Golden Arm: A golden arm is someone who has excellent welding technique and consistently produces solid results. Such a welder has been in the field for some time.

What do weld colors mean? ›

So here's the bottom line: when you see colors in a stainless steel weld, or the neighboring heat affected zone, it means the corrosion resistance has been reduced in that area. And the darker the color, the worse this is.
